A yeast-like fungal infection caused by candida albicans which affects the mucous membranes, the skin, and internal organs. Oral infections are called “thrush” and exhibit creamy white patches of exudate (inflammatory fluid) causing inflamed and sometimes painful mucosa. Common sites are the nailbeds, umbilicus, around the anus, and inside the throat. Occasionally, it may occur systemically and affect the heart and the lining around the brain and spinal cord. Candida occurs frequently in the vaginal area where it is not associated with AIDS and is not uncommon in diabetics.
